Round Ligament Pain

What it is

Round ligament pain is pain in the lower right or left side of the abdomen during pregnancy. The round ligament attaches the uterus to the pelvic bones and is put on increasingly more stretch throughout the second and third trimester of pregnancy.

How it is treated with physical therapy

This condition is treated primarily with manual therapy. Therapist is able to relax the surrounding muscles as well as assist in a comfortable stretch of the ligament itself.

Your Homework

You will likely be given postural exercises as well as strategies to calm the sharp pain when it comes.
If your partner is willing to come in, I will teach them how to work on the round ligament and muscles around it so they may help you at home as well.

How many sessions

This is typically helped in only one session initially, though you may find it beneficial to come back throughout the pregnancy when the pain arrises as the uterus continues to grow.
